Songs to get you in the Super Bowl spirit
Unfortunately, as the quasi-American holiday of Super Bowl Sunday approaches this year, the city of Philadelphia and the vast majority of St. Joe’s students do not have a horse in the race. While students will not be flocking to Center City to celebrate a Super Bowl victory or waking up at the crack of dawn to attend the Super Bowl Parade, there are many ways they can still enjoy the game and appreciate the greatest spectacle in sports. The rallying cry of last year’s Eagles Super Bowl run was almost exclusively Philadelphia rapper Meek Mill’s songs, as the team and city brought his fight for justice onto the national stage. Here are a few songs that may not capture the hearts of Eagles fans the way “Dreams and Nightmares” did, but nonetheless will help get you in the Super Bowl mood.
“Motorsport” by Migos, Nicki Minaj and Cardi B
Super Bowl LIII will be held in Atlanta at the city’s brand new Mercedes-Benz Stadium. One of the most famed commodities to call Atlanta home is the rap group Migos, who often refer to the city in their songs and claim it as their home. Migos has taken a special interest in the sports world, often referring to popular athletes and teams in their lyrics. In “Motorsport,” rapper Quavo says “Bill Belichick, take the air out the ball, just so I can flex,” alluding to the New England Patriots’ reputation for being accused of cheating. With the Patriots and their polarizing head coach Bill Belichick taking part yet again in this year’s Super Bowl, this song bears all the more relevance.
“Leaving California” by Maroon 5
Maroon 5 will be taking the stage for the coveted spot of this year’s Super Bowl Halftime Show. While there has been controversy over the NFL cancelling Maroon 5’s media availability during the week, Adam Levine and company will let their performance do the talking. In this song, the band sings of leaving California, as the Los Angeles Rams will do to play in the Super Bowl. One of the lyrics says “and now you say you’re leaving California, gotta head back East and want to leave tonight.” The Rams left to go east on Monday of Super Bowl week to take part in the endless press conferences and media appearances that surround the Super Bowl.
“Champion” by Nav featuring Travis Scott
Travis Scott accepted the NFL’s invitation to join Maroon 5 for the Super Bowl Halftime Show, much to the dismay of a large majority of the hip hop world, which chose to boycott the event because of the NFL’s stance on player protests. Nonetheless, this song in which the chorus reads “we got the trophy like a champion” is all about the goal of the Super Bowl: to get the Lombardi Trophy. In Travis Scott’s portion of the song, he raps “I’m going Tom Brady, I don’t make no bad call.” The Patriots esteemed quarterback will again be on center stage as he will continue to make his case for the greatest football player of all time.
“Crazy Train” by Ozzy Osbourne
While it has gained the reputation as a cliche song, it is perpetually heard in football stadiums across the country as a pregame song. Although you may only be watching the game on TV, Osbourne’s screeching voice may make you want to run through a wall. Many may remember the Patriots running out of the tunnel to this song in last year’s Super Bowl and they will likely do it again as they have claimed it as their own and included it in their team introduction for the last seven Super Bowls.
“Boys of Fall” by Kenny Chesney
In this ballad devoted solely to the game of football, Chesney reminisces about his days playing high school football. While it may feel like we are trudging through the dead of winter, this song will not only take you right back to mild temperatures of fall, but it will also make you feel as though you are right in the huddle alongside Tom Brady. Although it is to a slower tune than the rest of the playlist, Chesney’s soothing voice will help you sink into your couch to watch the big game.
