On Oct. 26, the SJU Latinx Student Association (LSA) held a Día de los Muertos celebration in the Perch. Students of all backgrounds were invited to decorate a candle and learn more about the culture surrounding and history behind Día de los Muertos, which takes place on Nov. 1 and 2 and is celebrated throughout Latin America. Traditionally, these candles are placed on an altar people make for loved ones who have passed away, as a symbol of the celebration of life and their presence that remains.
“The whole point of the event is to celebrate those who have passed,” said Danielle Campos ’23, co-president of LSA. “It’s not a funeral or anything that’s sad and emotional, but rather it’s something of celebrating their life. It’s very bright, colorful, and it’s just about happiness and remembering them.”
