Songs to hit the gym
Only five weeks stand between us and the summer sun. Warm weather is coming and that means it’s almost time to hang up our parkas and put on our tank tops.
Maybe the beach isn’t your thing, but you’re probably still working on that summer bod, or even thinking about an upcoming training regimen. After all, the annual Broad Street Run 10-Miler is right around the corner. So, regardless of your motivation, workout season is in full swing.
The key to a killer workout is a killer playlist. The best beats can make any form of physical exertion much more enjoyable, or at least a little less painful. To make your next training session the best yet, here are some songs to pump you up while you pump the iron.
“Don’t Let Me Down” by The Chainsmokers and Daya
Picture this: you have half a mile left to run until you finish your workout. Daya’s vocals begin to ring through your headphones and suddenly you are sprinting on the pavement, as if nothing could stop you. Who wouldn’t want to feel this powerful?
“Youngblood – R3HAB Remix” by 5 Seconds of Summer
Say what you want about 5 Seconds of Summer being your typical “teeny-bopper” boy band—this song can still get you moving. DJ R3HAB’s spin on the band’s single gives it an electric vibe with a beat perfect for keeping pace or counting reps.
“Havana” by Camila Cabello & Young Thug
This track has it all—a catchy chorus, a surprise rap verse and a trace of summer heat. When you need a bit of a change in speed, whether that be a water break or your final cool down, “Havana” is a necessary addition to every fitness fan’s soundtrack.
“Jai Ho” by A.R. Rahman & Sukhwinder Singh
This one might be a bit out there, but stay with me. If you have ever been to a Soulcycle class, or any spin class for that matter, this “Slumdog Millionaire” theme song has blasted on every instructor’s playlist at least once. Imagine your classic hill song, turning up the resistance in 10-second intervals. While you may not understand the lyrics, the track’s positivity is easily noted and will get you to your peak. That is, until you can take the resistance off on your downhill slope.
“break up with your girlfriend, i’m bored” by Ariana Grande
If you dance to this song, you will definitely break a sweat. Ariana Grande means business, and so should a good workout. Follow her lead and results will follow. Maybe not by breaking up with your partner, but by hitting the weight room.
“11 Minutes ” by YUNGBLUD and Halsey, featuring Travis Barker
A relatively unknown British rocker, YUNGBLUD released this new single, and it is sure to get your heartrate up. The track’s quick tempo makes for a certified bop. Throw in some smooth instrumentals and push yourself through the final minutes of your workout towards that post-workout protein powder.
