While watching the Golden Globe Awards Jan. 10, I was particularly happy to see two women
win: Jennifer Coolidge and Michelle Yeoh. For her performance in “White Lotus,” Coolidge won the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series/ Anthology, while Yeoh won Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Motion Picture for her role in “Everything, Everywhere All At Once.”
Coolidge is 61 years old, and this was her first Golden Globe win. Similarly, Yeoh is 60 and also received her first win. I find these victories to be exciting and refreshing, because they serve as a reminder that success has no age limit.
As a college student, I feel the mounting pressure to be successful after graduation.
However, a common misconception I have is that this has to happen right away or else I’ve failed. The truth is, there is no age or time limit on success in one’s life or career. Watching Yeoh and Coolidge secure Golden Globe wins for the first time in their 60s has reminded me of this, as well as inspired me.
I have a long life ahead of me that will inevitably be full of highs and lows, so there is no reason to rush the highs. I am not a failure if I don’t reach the level of success I aspire to in my 20s, or even 30s. Time will keep moving, and I will keep trying. My successes and goal completions will be just as satisfying whether I reach them at 25 or 35.
The wins of these talented women serve as reinforcement that there is no such thing as too late and that some of life’s biggest successes may not come until further along. Yeoh and Coolidge have reminded me to ease some of the pressure on my 19-year-old self and look forward to what life has to offer at every stage.
