What is an incomplete? 

An incomplete is a temporary placeholder on a student’s official transcript. Represented by an “I” on a transcript, an incomplete can be requested by a student and is given at the discretion of the professor. An incomplete can be granted when extenuating circumstances, such as a family, health or other emergency, makes it impossible for a student to complete their work before the final exam period is over. This work can include the final exam or other assignments from the semester that were not completed. 

How can a student request an incomplete? 

Students should communicate with their professor if a situation where an incomplete may be needed arises. It is the student’s responsibility to communicate this request to their professor to ensure the incomplete has been granted, to verify what work still needs to be completed and to let their professor know when the missing work will be submitted.

How long does the student have to complete their work if they are granted an incomplete? 

If the professor grants the incomplete, the student has 30 days to complete the work remaining for the course. Incompletes allow for students to earn credit for a course without having to withdraw from the course or earn a failing grade. 

What happens if a student doesn’t complete the outstanding work? 

After 30 days, if the work is not completed, the incomplete grade automatically becomes a failing grade. While extensions can be petitioned, they must be sent within or directly following the 30-day period. 

Who can grant incompletes and extensions? 

Professors have full authority to grant an incomplete to a student. However, if a student requests an extension beyond 30 days, the professor must petition the associate dean of the college the student is enrolled in. While a professor can petition for an extension, there is no guarantee that one will be granted. 

How does an incomplete affect a student’s GPA? 

An incomplete will not affect a student’s GPA as long as the work is completed within 30 days. Once the professor receives the student’s work, the professor will request a change of grade from the registrar’s office so the student’s transcript reflects their earned grade.
