Two new officers were installed at the Feb. 12 meeting of the University Student Senate to fill three vacant positions. The health center chair position was filled by Luke Consalvo ’25 and the athletics and recreation chair was filled by Anthony Molitor ’27.
Milton O’Brien ’25, vice president of Student Senate for the Hawk Hill campus, led the committee to find new students to fill the vacancies. O’Brien said Student Senate struggled to find students who were able to meet the requirements and who could attend all mandatory Student Senate events.
“There are rules for individuals to be in the senate [that] they have to follow,” O’Brien said. “You can’t miss a certain amount of meetings, or if there’s something that is mandatory for you, you have to make sure you attend.”
Applications for the three vacant positions on Student Senate opened last week. Applicants were given one week to apply and then were called in for interviews. O’Brien said Student Senate received seven applications, and successful candidates were informed Feb. 11.
The three open positions were the athletics and recreation chair, the health center chair and the marketing and public relations chair. Student Senate decided five senators must be from the UCity campus.
Because of this requirement, only two positions were filled, according to Patricia Tanola ’26, vice president of Student Senate for the University City campus.
“We want someone who resides mainly on the UCity campus,” Tanola said.
Anna Monari ’26, secretary of Student Senate, said students are not adequately served if there are vacant positions on the Senate.
“The whole point of the Senate is to advocate for the student body and to show that we have a voice in what’s happening here,” Monari said.
