The Hawk recommends all reporter and editor applicants take ENG 261: News Reporting. The course will be offered Tue/Thu at 9:30 a.m. in the fall 2024 semester.

The Hawk Newspaper Staff Positions
Editor in Chief:
The Editor in Chief is responsible for all content of The Hawk. The Editor in Chief is responsible for enforcement of all deadlines and acts as the publisher of the paper. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Oversee all editorial content for all published material (online and print)
- Know the status of all Hawk business matters
- Edit/Produce material as needed
- Set vision for the future of The Hawk
- Chair meetings of the Editorial Board and staff
- Oversee and develop special projects
- Act as a liaison between editorial and business departments
- Act as a public liaison to students, faculty and staff outside of The Hawk
- Meet regularly with faculty adviser(s)
Managing Editor:
The Managing Editor is responsible for overseeing the Editorial Board and staff of The Hawk to ensure the efficient internal functioning of the newspaper. The responsibilities of the Managing Editor include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Know the status of all The Hawk business
- Edit/Produce material as needed
- Oversee and develop assignments and special projects
- Train new staff members, in conjunction with staff editors and the Editor in Chief
- Act as a liaison between the various departments of The Hawk
- Meet regularly with faculty adviser(s)
Copy Chief:
The Copy Chief is responsible for proofreading all copy and making subsequent edits in accordance with the AP Stylebook and The Hawk Style Manual. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Training copy editors and managing the copy staff
- Proofreading and editing all copy before it is sent to the Editor in Chief
- Fact checking in collaboration with section editors regarding the quality of articles
Copy Editor:
Copy Editors assist the Copy Chief in proofreading, editing and fact checking. They are assigned work by the Copy Chief based on the needs of the determined copy process. They may be assigned to a specific section(s).
Proofreader/Fact-Checker:
Proofreaders and Fact-Checkers assist the Copy Chief, copy editors and/or section editors in proofreading, fact-checking and looking for layout errors on printed pages. They are assigned work by the Copy Chief based on the needs of the determined copy process and may edit for any section.
News Editor:
The News Editor is responsible for assigning coverage of campus, city, state, national, and international news/events that affect the St. Joe’s community. The News Editor edits and proofreads all articles that are published in the News section.
Opinions Editor:
The Opinions Editor is responsible for assigning coverage of Opinions articles that affect the St. Joe’s community as a whole, both on- and off-campus. The Opinions Editor edits and proofreads all articles that are published in the Opinions section.
Editorial Page Editor:
The Editorial Page Editor will work with the Editor in Chief and Editorial Board to develop weekly staff editorials that cover timely and pressing issues relevant to the St. Joe’s campus community.
Features Editor:
The Features Editor is responsible for assigning coverage of articles that fall under the category of soft news, human interest, humor, fashion, health, service, lifestyle and other campus/off-campus events and news. The Features Editor edits and proofreads all articles that are published in the Features section.
Sports Editor:
The Sports Editor is responsible for assigning coverage of sports articles that affect the St. Joe’s community. This includes all events at St. Joe’s Sweeney Field and Maguire Campus, as well as the Michael J. Hagan ’85 Arena. City and national sports events may also be covered. The Sports Editor edits and proofreads all articles that are published in the Sports section.
Special Projects Editor:
The Special Projects Editor is responsible for researching, developing and pitching special issues. The Special Projects Editor will oversee the production of special issues, which can range from longform stories, jackets, inserts or full issues dedicated to a proposed theme. They may work with a team or the entire staff as needed.
Assistant Editors:
The position of assistant editor is a training position. The assistant editor will learn editing responsibilities according to the definitions put forth by each section editor. The responsibilities of an assistant editor will therefore vary depending upon the section of The Hawk to which they are assigned. Assistant editor positions are available in: News, Opinions, Features, Sports, Photography, Creative and Business.
Reporters:
The responsibilities of a reporter involve writing articles on a weekly or biweekly basis as assigned by each section editor. Ideal reporters will have strong writing skills, knowledge of journalism and be excellent with communication. Reporter positions are available in News, Features and Sports. The Opinions section also accepts writers as columnists.
Photo Editor:
The Photo Editor is responsible for assigning photos and keeping track of all photo assignments and photographers. The Photo Editor must have experience with Adobe CS and InDesign. The Photo Editor, and their team ensures that all photos requested by section editors are ready on deadline. The Photo Editor must have meticulous organization. The Photo Editor prepares all photos for production.
Photographers:
The responsibilities of a photographer/photojournalist include: working with the Photo Editor and reporters to cover events on campus, writing captions or cutlines, and preparing the photos for publication. Ideal photographers must be proficient in Adobe CS (Photoshop and InDesign) or Lightroom, and be proficient with a DSLR camera. Photographers are expected to photograph at least one to two stories per week.
Multimedia Editor:
In consultation with the EIC and section editors, the Multimedia Editor is responsible for researching, developing and producing video, audio, text and other multimedia news-based content. Examples of this include 1-to-2 minute (TV) news inserts, 2-3 minute audio (radio) stories, and web-based graphics.
Creative Director:
The Creative Director is responsible for the design and production of the paper. The Creative Director works with section editors in designing each section. The Creative Director makes final decisions regarding layout. The Director also designs the front page in conjunction with the Editor-in-Chief and section editors. S/he will supervise the design of pages before each issue is published.
Online Editor:
The Online Editor is responsible for producing and maintaining The Hawk’s website (www.sjuhawknews.com). The Online Editor uploads all articles, pictures, and other content to the website weekly and maintains The Hawk’s online presence. Additionally, the Online Editor works in collaboration with the Managing Editor and Social Media Manager to develop special projects and web-based content.
Social Media Manager:
The Social Media Manager is responsible for sharing The Hawk’s news coverage via its established social media platforms, including Facebook and Twitter. Long-term goals include expanding web presence by creating and maintaining additional accounts on newly developing networking sites in order to increase online readership.
Graphics/Illustrations Editor:
The Hawk is looking for individuals adept in creating illustrations, infographics and other designs. This individual should be skilled in the use of Adobe Illustrator or other graphic design software or have drawing/illustration skills.
Business Manager:
The Business Manager is responsible for overseeing and being the leading force of the sales team, which solicits advertisements from Saint Joseph’s University departments, local businesses and national advertising agencies and/or companies. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Set budget in collaboration with Editor in Chief and Advisory Board
- Handle accounts payable, ensuring all payments due to vendors, etc. are paid in a timely fashion
- Handle accounts receivable, ensuring all payments due to The Hawk are paid in a timely fashion by providing and organizing insertion orders and invoices and following up on each as necessary
- Set financial and advertising vision for the future of newspaper
- Create and service new and existing advertiser accounts
- Maintain and grow advertising clients for ads in weekly print issues
- Develop new advertising and business initiatives
