In honor of Black History Month, The Hawk staff asked members of the Black Student Union executive board to share why it is important to celebrate Black History Month.
Why is it important that we celebrate Black History Month?
I think Black History Month is important because it gives everyone the opportunity to learn the many achievements of African Americans in Black history. It’s a learning opportunity for everyone to educate and familiarize the experiences African Americans have faced throughout history.
– Faith Jones ’22, Treasurer
Celebrating Black History, to me, is an essential part of being not only an informed citizen but also of learning to be a better friend and advocate for those around us. This month brings to the forefront a way of remembering stories and voices that otherwise would (and largely have been) collectively forgotten. I do think it’s important that we remember that this work of remembrance doesn’t stop on March 1. We can always find new ways to be better for marginalized and oppressed groups.
– Kelsey Welsh ’22, Publicist
It is our community’s chance of being appreciated, acknowledged, and heard after years of mistreatment and being swept under the rug. This is our way to take back the time of when Black people were accomplishing so much and receiving no credit or praise. It is important to understand just how much the Black community has done and is continuing to do for this world regardless of the hate we receive.
– Taryn Bellamy ’24, Publicist Apprentice
What is your favorite part about being on the BSU e-board?
My favorite part of being on the e-board is being able to come together with my peers to plan events for our members. Seeing the ideas we have come to fruition is the best feeling, most especially knowing we are creating a safe space for the Black students on campus. I am excited to see how successful our other events this month, especially our Black Love event and Talent Show, will be.
– Sophia Pringle ’23, Publicist
Is there anything else you would like people to know about Black History Month?
Black history month isn’t a lesson about Black history. Black history month is a celebration of Black history and Black victories.
