Why professors should relax their policies
As a soon-to-be 22 year old, I believe the attendance policies that professors are implementing, especially as precautions for covid-19 diminish, are not flexible or realistic. We should be granted more freedom as we enter this new chapter of adulthood. We should also be allowed to decide for ourselves if we attend class or not. However, our professors clearly don’t see it that way. Instead, they implement these inhumane attendance policies. Some professor’s attendance policies don’t even allow for any absences. As we are growing and changing, we deserve to be able to take a day off from class for any reason. I believe professors need to be more sympathetic and see it from our point of view. I also feel we shouldn’t have to explain our absences to our professors. We all take anywhere from four to six courses. We shouldn’t be expected to explain to each professor why we are missing class. The reason we miss class doesn’t matter and professors shouldn’t be allowed to ask why we missed. We all have different lives and different things going on in our lives. We shouldn’t be expected to share that with anyone we don’t want to share it with. Professors should have some sort of trust that we will learn what we missed and also trust that we know what is best for ourselves and our education. I think the fact that we pay to take these courses and be here is enough motivation for students to attend class. The students who don’t believe that will have that shown in their other coursework due to lack of knowledge from missing so much. Professors should have some sort of respect for us and our busy lives and I think that starts with more sympathetic attendance policies.
