The girls of Essex College are back in season two of “The Sex Lives of College Girls.” Just when I thought this show could not get any better, Mindy Kaling blew it out of the park once again. Picking up where it left off last season, we see Leighton, Whitney, Bela and Kimberly take on the second half of their freshman year and navigate problems that were just beginning to unravel. If Mindy Kaling knows how to do anything, it’s how to make light of a tough situation and highlight the importance of always having your friends close by for a pick-me-up. 

I feel as though many TV shows and movies don’t do college students justice in accurately showing what our day to day lives, both on and off campus, are really like. But, “The Sex Lives of College Girls” is one that portrays it in more of a relatable sense rather than a literal one. With issues like sexuality, harassment, finances, self-discovery and even climate change, Kaling pretty much nailed this season. Showing real issues portrayed in a relatable way for college students or college-age viewers is an extremely important factor that should not be overlooked. 

As college students, we sometimes have problems that we need to figure out on our own, and all four of these women are great examples of that. Between Whitney’s and Leighton’s self-discovery journeys, they have taught us that life will always be patient with us while we take a step back and readjust to figure out what makes us happy. And this is not to say that Bela and Kimberly didn’t also go through the same thing as they also had to take their situations into their own hands to become the most successful versions of themselves. 

Putting real-world issues into a 10-episode season speaks to more people than I think any of the producers expected. This series allows us to feel for people who have issues that we don’t always know about and teaches us to be kinder to one another. Plus, if you need a bit of comedic relief and don’t want to deal with your own real-world problems, this show can be that outlet for you too.
