To the Editor:
Regarding a Letter to the Editor response in the Oct. 9, 2019 issue of The Hawk Newspaper by George P. Sillup, Ph.D., I concur that the topic of gun violence and mass shootings in the United States is an urgent topic warranting discussion. Ascertaining the perspectives of international students is equally important in determining how citizens of the world view Americans regarding said topic.
But if the choice of the editorial staff to include the uncensored response of the student Sillup singled out in his letter is inappropriate, then the same should be said of Sillup’s statement that the paper should “not descend to the level of the person being interviewed.” Are we now making value judgments of an individual based upon something personally or professionally deemed inappropriate?
