As conservatism continues to be on the rise — not only in our country but also in others — the romanticization of “what was” seems to be the main motivator for this cultural shift. “Traditional values” and a return to a “greater America” also bring the devils of our past and the fear that comes with them. “Mad Men,” a show set in the 60s, is a good example of “what was.” Although it is a show and, therefore, meant for entertainment (which may have created an exaggeration of “what was”), the sentiments and the ideals of this era are still shown through this show. What comes with these traditions comes with the mythology of the era: the objectification of women and the domination of men through benevolent sexism.
Benevolent sexism, a seemingly positive but ultimately patronizing attitude toward women, is not good, and I must make that very clear. This is still a form of sexism that not only subjugates women to the role of wife and mother but also traps men in unrealistic explanations, threatening their masculinity. With the rise of the “manosphere” and the male loneliness epidemic, the need for psychological comfort or emotional outlets is directed toward women. Benevolent sexism is what creates this need; when men are providers and protect women, it is for the trade of sexual and emotional satisfaction.
“Adolescence,” a show by Netflix, shows a young boy who falls into this mindset. The boy has learned to objectify women from online communities and social pressure. In the end, he expresses his views toward women, claiming he is more honorable and has morals unlike other men since he did not sexually abuse the young girl he kills in the show. The reason he killed her? She posed a threat to his masculinity.
If we resurrect old idols, then we also resurrect the ideology that comes with it. These romanizations are not symbols of a “greater” time. We already know what comes with the time because we know what once was. Like the old saying goes, if one doesn’t learn from history, then history is doomed to repeat itself.
