With a month left of the season, St. Joe’s baseball is looking to keep up their momentum and finish strong.

The team is currently ranked #1 in Atlantic 10 standings, with an impressive 16-2 conference record and an overall 25-13 record. Head coach Fritz Hamburg attributed this ranking to the way the team has competed.

“We’re where we are for a reason, so we just got to keep the gas pedal down and keep playing with the conviction that we are,” Hamburg said.

Hamburg said he keeps the team on track, but “the best teams lead themselves.”

“This group has done a really good job of being tight and staying together,” Hamburg said. “We’ve pitched well. Our defense has improved drastically and, obviously, the offense has been really good. It’s a combination of things, but it’s also to a tightness within the group that they rely on each other and count on each other to get the job done.”

Sophomore catcher Blake Primrose earned his second consecutive A-10 Baseball Player of the Week honor April 13. Primrose credited his teammates and coaches for helping him achieve the recognition.

“It’s been a privilege, and [I] just keep trusting what I’m doing and not try to get so big headed and just continue the process,” Primrose said.

The team was on an eight-game win streak before dropping two in a row to Rutgers University and George Mason University April 15 and April 17, respectively. Sophomore outfielder Alex Kelsey said the team was focused on coming back after these losses.

“We’re just going to come up with a lot of energy in the beginning of the game and just do our best to compete the whole game,” Kelsey said.

“With these next couple of series that we have, just taking it game by game, not trying to do too much, and just keep trusting everyone else to do thier job.”

The Hawks bounced back April 18 with 17-9 and 15-6 wins in a doubleheader over George Mason. Kelsey, who had an RBI in the second game of the day and nine hits in his last five games, said he tries to give “100% every game.”

“[I] just bring the energy, hold the rope, do everything possible to bring the energies to this team, just so we can strive as a team,” Kelsey said.

Primrose said the season is long, and the team is taking the last month one step at a time.

“With these next couple of series that we have, just taking it game by game, not trying to do too much, and just keep playing our game and keep trusting everyone else to do their job,” Primrose said.
