With Labor Day weekend behind us and school in full swing, summer is officially over. While there may not be any beach vacations in the foreseeable future with fall slowly creeping in, this does not mean you have to let go of that sweet summer feeling. Here are four songs to tide you over until your next sunny getaway.
“Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes” – Jimmy Buffet
No one does a tropical tune better than Margaritaville legend Jimmy Buffet. Although fans are saddened by his recent passing, many are honoring his music and lifestyle of beaches, booze and relaxation. As part of the Big 8, Buffet’s eight most popular songs, “Changes In Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes” uses melodic Caribbean music with lyrics of sunshine and sailboats to create a catchy tune about island escapism. Honor Buffet the St. Joe’s way by laying out on Barb Beach and listening to this Parrothead hit.
“Desafinado” – Kali Uchis
During the summer of 2022, “Minions: The Rise of Gru” took the internet by storm. Found in this film’s soundtrack was a cover by Kali Uchis of the 1959 bossa nova hit “Desafinado”. Using a style of music that originated from Brazilian samba and American jazz, this modernized cover feels like a nice summer breeze. This groovy song is an underrated hit that will help you trudge through the cold weather that lies ahead.
“Beer In Mexico” – Kenny Chesney
When hanging out with friends on the beach, someone is bound to start blasting a country summer playlist. “Beer in Mexico” is a staple, as its upbeat melody encourages listeners to “let the warm air melt these blues away.” You might not be able to make it to Mexico anytime soon with your semester’s course load, but this song is a great alternative.
“Heatstroke” – Calvin Harris (Feat. Young Thug, Pharrell Williams and Ariana Grande)
In 2017, Scottish DJ Calvin Harris released the ultimate summer collaboration featuring popular artists like Young Thug, Pharrell Williams and Ariana Grande. “Heatstroke” is a funky pop song bound to fill you up with that warm happy feeling you can only get from hanging out in the summer sun. So instead of longing for your next vacation, “release, let go, and have a good time” by blasting this song all semester long.
