Philadelphia 76ers point guard Tyrese Maxey is returning to the NBA All-Star game for the second time in his career — only this time around, he has been appointed to a starting role among the Eastern Conference. The sixth-year talent is averaging career highs in categories of points (29.2), rebounds (4.2), assists (6.9) and steals (2.0) per game, all while ranking first in the league in minutes played per game (39.0). Maxey’s powerful yet dynamic style of play this season has placed him in the conversation for the league’s MVP for the first time in his career. According to the Kia MVP Ladder, Maxey currently possesses the fifth best odds to receive the award at this point of the season.
The departure of former Sixers guard James Harden early into the 2023-24 season paved the way for Maxey to blossom into the second most important player behind star center Joel Embiid for the Sixers. Embiid was also named an All-Star that year but was replaced in the lineup by guard Trae Young due to injury. Maxey earned his first All-Star appearance that season, where he was recognized as a reserve for the Eastern Conference group. He logged 17 minutes in his all-star debut, finishing the game with a statline of 10 points, three rebounds and three assists.
Votes for All-Star consideration are tallied among fans, players and media members, with the results being weighted 50%, 25% and 25%, respectively. Maxey finished second in fan voting, receiving a total of 2.9 million votes across the 28-day voting period. The only player to exceed this feat was Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks, who received a whopping 3.2 million fan votes. Maxey finished fifth in the category of player total votes (132) and tied for third in votes from the media (85), enabling him to secure this much-deserved honor. Jaylen Brown of the Boston Celtics, Cade Cunningham of the Detroit Pistons and Jalen Brunson of the New York Knicks occupy the remaining spots in the starting lineup for the Eastern Conference.
NBA All-Star Weekend will take place at the Intuit Dome, home of the Los Angeles Clippers, from Feb. 13-15. This year’s main contest will take place the night of Feb. 15, marking the league’s 75th All-Star game. Sixers fans are eager to watch the young star showcase his talents alongside some of the greatest players in the league.
