Black Americans have made countless contributions throughout our nation’s history, many of which have been inadequately honored by educational and political institutions. When this history is not ignored, it is sometimes misrepresented, boiled down to isolated narratives of trauma. The U.S.’s history of racism must be studied to ensure atrocities like slavery and Jim Crow policies never happen again — and to ensure the inequities that continue to persist can be addressed. However, recognition of Black history involves more than acknowledging suffering and injustice. It also includes celebrating Black success, joy and excellence.
Black inventors, artists, musicians and politicians deserve recognition, not only for their contributions to society but also for their roles as trailblazers for younger generations. Black accomplishments deserve greater recognition in American culture and educational curriculums across the country.
Honoring Black history goes beyond education: It also involves uplifting and empowering the Black community. This can be done in a variety of ways,
“Black history is American history and deserves to be holistically celebrated all year long.’’
including consuming art and literature created by Black Americans, championing equitable initiatives and supporting local Black-owned businesses.
On campus, we can support affinity organizations and attend campus events that celebrate Black history and culture. We also have the ability to engage with Black history in the classroom, and students and faculty alike have a continuing obligation to represent Black voices in class materials and discussions.
Black history is American history and deserves to be holistically celebrated all year long. Black history should serve as an inspiration to all Americans to continue to strive for the ideals of freedom, equality and justice for all as we continue to pursue a more equitable union.
