St. Joe’s announced in mid-October that in the following months, Manresa Hall, a facility that has provided community and nursing care for retired Jesuits on the Hawk Hill campus for many years, will be closing its doors. This decision was made by the Jesuits of the USA East Province. The Jesuits in the facility are expected to relocate to Colombiere Jesuit Community in Baltimore, Murray‑Weigel Hall in New York City and the Campion Center in Weston. In this moment of transition, it is important the St. Joe’s community gives a warm farewell to the Jesuits who reside there.
The 11 Jesuit priests and brothers who currently reside at Manresa Hall have dedicated their lives to service and social justice, as evinced by their work as professors, advisors and friends. They have encouraged those around them to live by the core Jesuit principle of cura personalis — care for the whole person — and have promoted the magis — striving for excellence — in their work. These principles, centered around the betterment of both the individual and society, are central pillars of a Jesuit education.
As St. Joe’s wishes a warm goodbye to the residents of Manresa Hall, we must remember the vitality of service to those in need. To best recognize these lives of service, we encourage all St. Joe’s community members — students, faculty and alums alike — to follow Jesuit values by seeking out service in our own communities and working to make the world a more compassionate and equitable place.
