When I think about Black History Month, I don’t just think about what we learn in school. I think about pride, and I think about strength. I think about everything Black people have been through and how we are still here, still rising. Black History Month means celebrating our culture, our struggles and our success. It’s a time to remember the people who made sacrifices so we could have better opportunities today.
Coming from a Liberian family makes this month even more meaningful to me. I was raised to be proud of where I come from. My family taught me the importance of respect, faith and sticking together. We carry our traditions, our food and our values with us. Being Liberian and being Black is something I hold close to my heart. It reminds me that my story started long before me.
One person who really helped me through hard times is rapper J. Cole. His music feels real and honest. As I got older, I began to truly understand his message. He talks about growing up in the hood, dealing with money problems, family struggles and trying to build a better life. I relate to that pressure of wanting more while still remembering where you came from. My favorite song by him is “Love Yourz” because it reminds me that happiness comes from appreciating what you already have. His music motivates me to stay focused and keep going, even when life feels hard.
I also think about Ruby Bridges. She was only six years old when she walked into a school where people did not want her there because she was Black. That kind of courage is powerful. As someone who attends a predominantly white institution, there are moments when I question myself. Thinking about her strength reminds me to stand tall and be proud of who I am.
Black History Month reminds me that being Black is powerful. Our stories matter. Our culture matters. I am proud to be Black every single day.
